Tony
He was there from the first
I did not know a time without him
He walked with me and told me of his war
He showed me how to plant the seeds
And dig the holes
He gave me more than all the rest
When my father was not there
He always was helping me in a way that only he could
Then that day when his heart beat no more
They told me he was just a drunk
No good
Do not cry you are too big
I could not go when they laid him down to rest
They kept me home where I would be safe
Even as he drank himself to death
He loved me as his son
More than the one whose I was
Now I am older and when I think of my childhood
I remember Tony holding my hand as we walked
That old dirt trail to his shack
to play cards one more night
Thank you, Tony
